Is Leafeon ex (Prismatic Evolutions #144) worth grading? October 2026

Data as of 25 October 2026. Raw price: TCGplayer market price (near-mint) from our daily snapshot, plus PriceCharting's ungraded sold average for comparison. Graded prices: PriceCharting sold listings for this card, accessed 25 October 2026. Fees: PSA and CGC published fee schedules. This is a worked example of a method, not investment advice. Check today's sold prices before you decide.

The short answer

It depends on which raw price is real for your copy. Against TCGplayer's market price, no; against what raw copies actually sell for on eBay, yes for a clean copy. Raw Leafeon ex #144 is $308.56 on TCGplayer (25 October 2026), 8% below the $334.14 we recorded on 18 September. But 24 raw eBay sales from 5 October to 23 October had a median of $230.69 (PriceCharting average $261.14). A PSA 10 sells for about $662 and a PSA 9 for about $246. At PSA Standard ($59.99) and a 30% chance of a 10, grading averages about −$22 against a $309 raw sale and about +$20 against a $261 one. Break-even is about a 36% chance of a 10 at the TCGplayer price and 25% at the PriceCharting average.

Put another way: at 30% odds, grading pays only if you could not sell the card raw for more than about $284. If a buyer will pay you the TCGplayer price, take it; if your realistic raw sale is nearer the eBay median, the slab is the better bet. Leafeon is the #3 card in Prismatic Evolutions, after Umbreon ex and Sylveon ex.

Which PSA tier applies

  • PSA Standard ($59.99, cap $1,000). Raw ($308.56), a PSA 9 (~$246) and a PSA 10 (~$662) all sit under $1,000. 24 PSA 10 sales from 4 October to 23 October ran $551.00 to $749.99, so no upcharge applies.
  • PSA's cheaper Value tiers have been paused since 2 June 2026. PSA ties their return to its backlog falling to about 5 million cards; it reported 8.2 million on 6 October. Standard takes about 90 to 100 business days, so we charge 135 calendar days of waiting.

The math

  • Net if it grades 10: 661.65 × 0.8675 − 0.40 − 59.99 − 6 = $507.59
  • Net if it grades 9: 246.50 × 0.8675 − 0.40 − 59.99 − 6 = $147.45
  • Net if 8 or lower: 215.50 × 0.8675 − 0.40 − 59.99 − 6 = $120.56
  • Expected net if graded: 0.30 × 507.59 + 0.50 × 147.45 + 0.20 × 120.56 = $250.11

Version A, raw = $308.56: sell raw today 308.56 × 0.8675 − 0.40 = $267.28; cost of waiting $4.94; expected gain 250.11 − 267.28 − 4.94 = −$22.

Version B, raw = $261.14: sell raw today $226.14; cost of waiting $4.18; expected gain +$20. At the eBay median ($230.69) it is +$47.

How much depends on your odds of a 10

Your chance of a PSA 10 Raw = $308.56 Raw = $261.14
10% −$96 −$54
20% −$59 −$17
30% −$22 +$20
40% +$15 +$57
50% +$51 +$93
60% +$88 +$130

The 9 / 8-or-lower split is kept at 5 : 2 in every row. Break-even is about 36% (version A) and 25% (version B). The 25 to 35% PSA 10 rate usually quoted for modern Special Illustration Rares sits between the two, which is why the raw price decides it.

Why the two raw prices are so far apart

TCGplayer's market price is built from TCGplayer's own recent sales and follows a falling market with a lag; eBay sold listings show where buyers are today. For this card the gap between the TCGplayer price and the median eBay sale is about $78, more than the PSA fee. Before you decide, look up sold listings for near-mint raw copies and use the price you would actually get.

The catch: a PSA 9 loses money

A PSA 9 sells for about $246 (median of recent sales), below the PriceCharting raw average, so after the fee, shipping and selling costs a 9 nets about $83 less than selling raw at $261. All of the expected gain comes from the 10. If your copy has off-centre borders, whitening or print lines, 30% is too high; at 10% odds the average is −$54 even at the lower raw price.

PSA 10s have been falling too: the median sale was $720.00 from 4 October to 9 October (9 sales) and $635.00 from 18 to 23 October (7 sales), -11.8%. A slab you send now comes back in about four months, at whatever the price is then.

If PSA's Value Bulk tier returns at its pre-pause $24.99, break-even at the TCGplayer price drops to about 26% (Value tiers have their own value caps, so check them first).

What about CGC or TAG?

CGC Economy is only $20, but CGC 10s for this card sold for a median of $329.99 since September (7 sales). A CGC 10 nets about $259.87, +$34 versus selling raw at $261, against about +$277 for a PSA 10, so for this card the PSA premium is worth the higher fee if you expect a 10. TAG 10s have sold for $660.00 to $1,000.00 since August (4 sales), around or above PSA 10s, but we have not modelled TAG's fees here; use the calculator below if you are weighing it.
