The short answer
For a clean copy, only just, at PSA, and only because of the 10. Raw Charizard ex #234 is $257.65 (10 October 2026). A PSA 10 sells for about $758, but a PSA 9 sells for about $242, which is less than raw. At a 30% chance of a 10, grading at PSA Standard comes out about +$50 ahead of selling raw. If it does not come back a 10, you end up about $81 behind. The break-even chance of a 10 is about 19%. The shape is the same as Pikachu ex (Surging Sparks #238): a sub-$300 chase card where the whole case rests on the 10.

Which PSA tier applies
PSA prices grading by the card's value after grading and moves a card up a tier (billing the difference) when the graded value is above the tier's cap. For this Charizard the cheap tier covers everything:
- PSA Standard ($59.99, cap $1,000) covers every outcome. Raw ($257.65), a PSA 9 (~$242) and a PSA 10 (~$758) are all under $1,000, so there is no upcharge. The 15 PSA 10 sales since 27 September ran $696.00 to $849.00, none above the cap.
- Standard is slow (about 95 business days), so we charge the cost of waiting about 135 calendar days.
- If raw ever climbed above $1,000, Standard would stop being valid and the 9 and 8 outcomes would pay Priority ($79.99). At today's prices that is a long way off.
The inputs
| Input | Value used | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Raw market price | $257.65 | TCGplayer market, 10 October 2026 (-8.5% vs $281.53 on 13 Sep). PriceCharting's ungraded average is $257.48, almost identical |
| Sold price if PSA 10 | $757.50 | PriceCharting PSA 10 average; 1 Oct sales $710.00, $779.00, $779.99, $785.00, $849.00; 8 Oct sales $700.00, $725.00, $765.00 |
| Sold price if PSA 9 | $242.46 | Mean of 14 PSA 9 sales, 27 Sep to 8 Oct, $207.50 to $299.00 |
| Sold price if 8 or lower | $235.33 | Blend of PriceCharting's grade 8 (about $252) and grade 7 (about $202) averages |
| Chance of a 10 / 9 / 8 or lower | 30% / 50% / 20% | Assumption for a copy that looks clean under a loupe (same as our other card articles). The table below shows other odds |
| Selling platform | eBay, 13.25% + $0.40 | eBay trading-card fee schedule |
| Shipping and insurance | $6.00 per card | Share of an insured submission, as in our set value lists |
| Time value of money | 5% a year, 135 days | PSA Standard about 95 business days |
The math, PSA Standard
- Net if you sell raw today: 257.65 × 0.8675 − 0.40 = $223.11
- Net if it grades 10: 757.50 × 0.8675 − 0.40 − $59.99 − 6 shipping = $590.74
- Net if it grades 9: 242.46 × 0.8675 − 0.40 − $59.99 − 6 = $143.94
- Net if 8 or lower: 235.33 × 0.8675 − 0.40 − $59.99 − 6 = $137.76
- Expected net if graded: 0.30 × 590.74 + 0.50 × 143.94 + 0.20 × 137.76 = $276.75
- Cost of waiting 135 days: 223.11 × 5% × 135/365 = $4.13
- Expected gain versus selling raw: 276.75 − 223.11 − 4.13 = +$50
How much depends on your odds of a 10
| Your chance of a PSA 10 | Expected gain vs selling raw |
|---|---|
| 10% | −$40 |
| 20% | +$5 |
| 30% | +$50 |
| 40% | +$94 |
| 50% | +$139 |
The 9 / 8-or-lower split is kept at 5 : 2 in every row. Break-even is about 19%. Below that, selling raw wins on average.
Why not CGC?
CGC Economy is only $20, but the slab sells for much less than a PSA 10. The 26 CGC 10 sales since July ran $255.00 to $450.00 (median about $360). If your card comes back a CGC 10 you net about $286.33 after the $20 fee, shipping and selling fees, +$63 more than selling raw today. That is a better CGC result than Pikachu ex gets, but it is still a fifth of the PSA 10 upside. A CGC 9.5 (recent sales $246.50 to $399.99) comes out close to selling raw after fees, and anything lower loses money. The CGC Pristine 10 label is the exception ($732 to $850 since July), and it is much rarer than a regular 10.
A note on TAG
Three TAG 10 copies sold for $1,099.99 to $1,200.00 between June and late September, more than a PSA 10. Two cautions before you read that as the answer: three sales is a thin record, and TAG's 10 is a stricter grade than PSA's, so the odds of getting one are lower than the 30% we assume for PSA. A TAG 10 worth over $1,000 is also above TAG Express's $1,000 cap, so it is billed at TAG Priority ($149). At $1,200.00 the net would be about $885.60, but with no PSA-style 9 comps at volume we cannot build the full odds table, so this article works through PSA.
Read the result carefully
Charizard ex #234 is a 10-or-nothing card. A PSA 10 sells for about 2.9 times raw, but a PSA 9 sells for less than raw, and after fees a 9 nets about $79 less than just selling the card raw. Seven times out of ten (at our assumed odds) you are about $81 worse off. The positive average comes entirely from the 10.
The card is a textured Special Illustration Rare, and texture hides edge and surface wear. Check the back edges and corners under a bright light, and the centering, before you count on a 10. If the centering is worse than about 60/40 or there is any whitening, your odds drop well below the break-even.
What would change the answer
- The PSA 10 price. At 30% odds a PSA 10 needs to sell for about $567 for grading to break even. Recent sales are $696.00 to $849.00, so there is room, but the 8 October sales ($700.00, $725.00, $765.00) were at the low end of the range. Check sold prices, not asking prices.
- The raw price. Raw fell from $281.53 on 13 Sep to $257.65 today (-8.5%). A lower raw price makes grading look better on paper, because the gap to the PSA 10 widens, but only if the PSA 10 price holds. In Paldean Fates, 15 of the 16 cards worth $20+ on 13 September are lower today; the set's top card, Mew ex #232, is $870.16.
- Your risk tolerance. A 70% chance of losing about $81 is a real risk even when the average is positive.
