The short answer

Yes for a clean copy, because a PSA 10 is worth about 2.9 times raw. A PSA 9 is not. Raw Sylveon ex #156 is $391.85 on TCGplayer (21 October 2026), up 6% on the day after a 20% one-week drop. A PSA 10 sells for about $1,152 and a PSA 9 for about $377, close to raw. At PSA Standard ($59.99, plus a $20 upcharge only if it comes back a 10) a 10 puts you about +$567 ahead of selling raw today, and anything less leaves you about −$88. At a 30% chance of a 10 the average result is about +$109; break-even is about a 13% chance of a 10.

That makes Sylveon the opposite of Milotic ex: both have a PSA 9 worth about raw, but Sylveon's 10 is worth hundreds more, so the fee is a small share of the upside.

Which PSA tier applies

  • Declare at PSA Standard ($59.99, cap $1,000). Raw ($391.85), a PSA 9 (~$377) and an 8 sit far under $1,000.
  • A 10 is upcharged to Priority ($79.99, cap $1,500). PSA 10s average $1,151.87; 24 sales from 29 September to 20 October ran $1,007.50 to $1,400.00, all under $1,500. PSA bills the $20 difference only on a card that grades above the declared tier's cap.
  • PSA's cheaper Value tiers have been paused since 2 June 2026. PSA ties their return to its backlog falling to about 5 million cards; it reported 8.2 million on 6 October. Standard takes about 90 to 100 business days, so we charge 135 calendar days of waiting.

The math

  • Net if it grades 10: 1,151.87 × 0.8675 − 0.40 − 59.99 − 20 − 6 = $912.86
  • Net if it grades 9: 377.00 × 0.8675 − 0.40 − 59.99 − 6 = $260.66
  • Net if 8 or lower: 367.50 × 0.8675 − 0.40 − 59.99 − 6 = $252.42
  • Expected net if graded: 0.30 × 912.86 + 0.50 × 260.66 + 0.20 × 252.42 = $454.67

Version A, raw = $391.85: sell raw today 391.85 × 0.8675 − 0.40 = $339.53; cost of waiting $6.28; expected gain 454.67 − 339.53 − 6.28 = +$109.

Version B, raw = $382.50: sell raw today $331.42; cost of waiting $6.13; expected gain +$117.

How much depends on your odds of a 10

Your chance of a PSA 10 Raw = $391.85 Raw = $382.50
10% −$22 −$14
20% +$43 +$52
30% +$109 +$117
40% +$174 +$183
50% +$240 +$248

The 9 / 8-or-lower split is kept at 5 : 2 in every row. Break-even is about 13% (version A) and 12% (version B), well under the 25 to 35% PSA 10 rate usually quoted for modern Special Illustration Rares. That is why this card clears our $150 raw screen comfortably.

The catch: it is a 10-or-nothing card

A PSA 9 sells for about $377 (median of recent sales), so after the fee, shipping and selling costs a 9 nets about $85 less than selling raw today. Every dollar of the expected gain comes from the 10. If your copy has off-centre borders, whitening or print lines, the 30% assumption is too high and the answer can flip; at 10% odds the average is −$22.

The slab price has also been falling, just more slowly than raw. The median PSA 10 sale was $1,318.50 from 29 September to 5 October (6 sales) and $1,140.47 from 15 to 20 October (8 sales), -13.5%. Raw went from $528.19 on 1 October to $369.90 on 20 October and $391.85 on 21 October 2026. At 30% odds a PSA 10 would have to fall to about $734 before grading stops paying (version A), so there is room, but the gain you lock in depends on the price when the slab comes back about four months from now.

If PSA's Value Bulk tier returns at its pre-pause $24.99, the same inputs give a break-even of about 8% (Value tiers have their own value caps, so check them first).

Why not CGC?

CGC Economy is only $20, but CGC 10s for this card sold for a median of $504.99 in July and August (5 sales). A CGC 10 nets about $411.68, +$72 versus selling raw at the TCGplayer price, against about +$567 for a PSA 10. For this card the PSA premium is worth the higher fee if you expect a 10.
